Headings and Section Titles

Canons of Statutory Interpretation

Definition

Short titles or preambles placed above sections or groups of sections within an Act, which may be referenced to understand the general subject matter, but cannot restrict or control the plain meaning of unambiguous statutory words.

Example

In Raichurmatham Prabhakar v. Rawatmal Dugar, the Supreme Court held that headings prefixed to sections can be referred to as an internal aid when statutory words are open to two interpretations.
