Long Title as an Aid to Interpretation

Canons of Statutory Interpretation

Definition

The formal descriptive title placed at the beginning of an Act (e.g., "An Act to consolidate and amend the law relating to..."), which forms part of the statute and can be used to ascertain the legislative scope.

Example

In Aswini Kumar Ghose v. Arabinda Bose, the Supreme Court held that the long title is an admissible internal aid to construction, though it cannot override plain, unambiguous statutory text.
