Ejusdem Generis
Canons of Statutory Interpretation
Definition
"Of the same kind or nature." A linguistic rule establishing that when general words follow specific, enumerated words belonging to an identifiable genus or category, the general words must be restricted to items of the same class as the specific words.
Example
In State of Bombay v. Ali Gulshan, the Supreme Court examined a statute empowering the requisition of property for "any other public purpose"; the court held that the phrase could not be construed ejusdem generis with "State purpose" because the preceding words did not constitute a distinct single genus.
