He Who Comes to Equity Must Come with Clean Hands

Principles of Natural Justice & Equity

Definition

An equitable doctrine holding that a plaintiff or petitioner who seeks discretionary equitable relief (such as an injunction or writ) must not have acted dishonestly, unfairly, or deceitfully regarding the subject matter of the claim.

Example

In Ramjas Foundation v. Union of India, the Supreme Court dismissed a land challenge because the petitioner deliberately suppressed material revenue notifications and fabricated allotment letters, holding that they did not come with clean hands.
