De Minimis Non Curat Lex

Principles of Natural Justice & Equity

Definition

"The law does not concern itself with trifles." An equitable maxim establishing that courts will not grant relief or take cognizance of claims where the harm, violation, or inconvenience is negligible or insignificant (codified under Section 95 IPC / Section 25 BNS).

Example

In Veeda Menezes v. Yusuf Khan, the Supreme Court applied this principle to dismiss a criminal prosecution where a defendant accidentally brushed an unlit cigarette against the complainant during an argument, holding the harm to be trivial.
