Supervisory vs. Revisional Jurisdiction

Jurisdictional & Appellate Practice Terms

Definition

Revisional Jurisdiction (e.g., Sec 115 CPC): A statutory power strictly confined to correcting jurisdictional errors or illegalities in non-appealable orders.

Supervisory Jurisdiction (Article 227): A constitutional power of superintendence that extends not only to courts but also to quasi-judicial tribunals, capable of being exercised suo motu to ensure basic legal order.

Example

While a statutory revision under Section 115 CPC cannot be invoked against an administrative tribunal unless explicitly permitted by statute, the High Court’s supervisory power under Article 227 reaches that tribunal without statutory permission.
