Subject-Matter Jurisdiction

Jurisdictional & Appellate Practice Terms

Definition

The inherent authority of a court or tribunal to hear and determine cases belonging to a specific class, subject, or category of law (e.g., family disputes, commercial claims, insolvency, tax).

Example

A standard District Civil Court does not possess subject-matter jurisdiction to adjudicate corporate insolvency petitions under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), as exclusive statutory jurisdiction is conferred upon the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT).
