Locus Standi

Jurisdictional & Appellate Practice Terms

Definition

"Place of standing." The legal capacity, right, or qualification of a person or entity to initiate an action or be heard in a court of law, established by demonstrating a direct personal injury or infringement of a recognized legal right.

Example

A resident of Mumbai files a civil suit in a Delhi court to challenge the validity of a property sale deed between two unrelated third parties in Kolkata; the suit is dismissed at the threshold because the plaintiff completely lacks locus standi.
