Freedom of Conscience (Article 25)

Constitutional & Public Law Doctrines

Definition

The absolute internal constitutional freedom of an individual to mold their own relation with God or the universe, hold any religious belief, change beliefs, or profess an atheistic/agnostic worldview without State coercion.

Example

In Bijoe Emmanuel v. State of Kerala, three Jehovah's Witness students were expelled for refusing to sing the National Anthem; the Supreme Court reversed the expulsion, holding their respectful standing without singing was protected under their freedom of conscience.
